This week in karma

I think it's both just and hilarious that NFL owners think that Rush Limbaugh is too much of an asshole to share their elite club with, say, Dan Snyder. Not everyone agrees. Carol Slezak:

"I happen to believe that pro sports are a bottom-line business. If Limbaugh wanted to buy the company you worked for, you'd be hard-pressed to stop him. The NFL might be more high-profile than most industries, but the same basic rules should apply. You might not like Limbaugh — does anyone like Limbaugh? — but that's not the point. A lot of people don't like Vick, either, but he's back in the league."

Here's the kicker:

"Limbaugh might be a joke, but there's no NFL rule forbidding clowns from owning a team."

Argh. Not exactly true: "Prospective owners must be approved by 24 of the league's 32 teams." This does not prohibit clowns from being team owners, naturally. But it does cause problems for people who say things like "the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons."

Anyone who's followed the No Fun League should be fully aware that it's a rich, powerful media company that's obsessive to a fault about public relations, so the idea that a bottom-line business would be wary of Rush is neither surprising, unnatural, or bad for the bottom line.

Rush is too good for the NFL. I think it's an NFL publicity stunt. Or, they're scared to have someone smart amongst them.

And a LOT of people can;t stand pmpous,self-righteous,racist bitches in the sports media but they STILL have their jobs and frankly your comment was not only stupid and insulting but racist. I could JUST AS EASILY say that hockey looks like a NASCAR preview complete with stupid, redneck hicks and brutal skinheads thugs ready to fight the minute they get looked at funny. Suck on THAT bitch!

I agree with what you said, Whet. I also think, looking at the socio-political makeup of the NFL ownership, only one (dude from the Steelers) is a liberal. So, while Limbaugh would definitely become the most outspoken of the owners in the NFL (Not For Liberals?), he certainly wouldn't shift the political balance at all. It's been very admirable that so many players have come out against this (including the NFLPA), but it would take one hell of a historic leap for a majority of the owners in this league to deny Limbaugh membership into their admittedly f—ed club. Whatever happens, I am pretty sure Rush Limbaugh will ultimately end up spending time in whatever special circle of Hell Marge Schott calls home.

In other words, all of the MediaMatters stuff on Rush vs. the NFL owners is extremely fluffy, kinda specious, and generally much too premature. There are some giant gaps (and an obvious and excitable bias) to their coverage that leaves one wanting a lot more.
