Dairy down. Eggs to go.
Remember Lona Lane, the city councilman whose failed attempt to ban pet chickens within the city limits, was followed by a successful ban on ice cream trucks in the 18th Ward?
Well, she's planning to use the council's new prohibition on noisy hounds in a grudge match against the birds:
"Although barking dogs are clearly the target, the ordinance refers to “any dog or other animal” that makes excessive noise.
Ald. Lona Lane (18th) said last week she intends to use it against the hens and roosters who make a racket in her South Side ward."

that is ridiculous! she's wasting taxpayer's time on this issue. i'm sure there are other issues in her ward that are much more important!
I keep chickens for eggs, and I agree that roosters are not appropriate for the city, at least until one or a few of the many farms out there attempting to breed crow-less roosters are successful in developing a line is consistently silent. I think banning all chickens one of those make-it-go-away-I-don't-want-to-think-about-it, make-myself-feel-good-by-passing-a-law moves.
Using the noise ordinance to make people get rid of them sounds like a fair plan to me - roos can be REALLY loud and having a pet that wakes up the neighbors at 5:00am is inconsiderate to say the least...

ps - no, hens don't need roosters to lay eggs
This is entirely unnecessary. It's already illegal to have ANY pet that makes noise audible next door throughout the day, produces odors that are detectable next door, or causes any other problem. If anyone is having problems with their neighbors' birds, call animal control.
Is she just trying to "get at" a certain demographic she isn't part of?
