TBC: Board Prez Offers to Step Down

Posted by Deanna Isaacs on 08.05.09 at 06:48 PM

Theatre Building Chicago spokesperson Jeff DeLong said today that board president Craig Wilson has offered to step down if departing artistic director John Sparks will agree to stay on. Sparks announced his departure in protest after the board dumped longtime executive director Joan Mazzonelli. The board's action has led to a storm of comment (at the end of the story linked above). According to DeLong, discussions between Sparks and the board to settle this issue were to be held this morning, but have been postponed to an indefinite date later in the week. Just yesterday, TBC officially announced that associate artistic director Allan Chambers had been promoted to the AD job.

I hope John holds out for bringing back Joan, with no offense meant to Allan. It's the only right thing the Board can do.

Now, what was that comment "Chicboy" posted after the Reader's original article about this controversy appeared online (http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/the-n…

Wrote Chicboy: "I believe its time for the blogging and articles to stop. What is done, is done. Do I agree with it....not all of it. But I have to ask myself Do I beat a dead horse or do I find a way to support the theatre arts and Theatre Building Chicago?"

Thank heavens people didn't take his namby-pamby advice. And thank heavens for the Reader which provided an online forum for debate on this important matter, leading to what seem to be positive results.

This is being disputed as "rumor" on other sites, but what welcome news if justice does indeed prevail here! It certainly would be great to get confirmation sooner rather than later.
