Louis or Louise Grimes, city employee; an apple; and one line of dialogue.

48 Hour Film Project organizers keep participants honest by giving them a set of elements that they all must incorporate into their films, assuring they have no time for advance preparation. 45 filmmaking teams each learned of the elements, and then had two days in July to write, shoot and edit their entries in the fifth Chicago iteration of the national 48 HFP.

The results are on display tonight at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 5:30 PM at the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee. There are different programs each night — the first set of films screened Thursday.

After Sunday's screening there's a wrap party at Capitol Club, 4244 N. Milwaukee.

It's a shame that Stephen Patterson "organized" the event - specifically the wrap party. I think he envisioned it as the BET Awards, complete with drag-queen-ish models who were "working" the party and attempting to promote themselves and their awful clothing line. The DJ was spinning disco/funk/soul, and there was a beatbox/hip hop act that was also involved in the promotional circus.

Um...isn't the wrap party and awards presentation supposed to be about the filmmakers?

While beatboxing is (in my opinion) one of the coolest things on the planet, and though I'm a HUGE fan of r&b/soul, it was painfully obvious that this was NOT the appropriate venue for all that.

Though the start time was listed as 7pm, Mr. Patterson didn't grace us with his presence until 9:30pm...and even then, he didn't have it together.

Oh, and what was up with the Vanna White in the silver-sequined costume?

Tragic.

The sad part is that I'm sure that today everyone is patting themselves on the back for a well-produced event.

Congrats to the very talented film makers, casts, and crews. It's just a shame that your wrap party was less about you, and more about the ghetto-est promo circus ever.
