Today in business restrictions

Posted By on 07.15.09 at 11:47 AM

* Rex Huppke has an interesting piece on a community movement in Auburn-Gresham to shut down a fast-food joint because it encourages loitering and drug-pushing. While I'm familiar with the phenomenon - the old McDonalds on 53rd in Hyde Park was notorious for attracting a bad element -  I think there's some confusion of cause and effect.

* Awhile back Tom Tunney was agitating about banning vendors from an increased area around Wrigley Field because of public safety and irritation. Yet another confusion of cause and effect - vendors are at Wrigley because it's a wonderland of irritation. But behind closed doors, Tunney had other reasons. If you haven't figured them out by now, or find yourself surprised when trained capitalists use the law to cut down on economic competition, click through.
