That's my reaction to the announcement by Cook County commissioner Tony Peraica that he's gearing up to take legal action against Mayor Daley over funding for the Olympics.
Specifically, he's asking Cook County state's attorney Anita Alvarez and Illinois attorney general Lisa Madigan to force the mayor to explain what gives him the right to commit the taxpayers of Chicago to guaranteeing the cost of the 2016 Olympic games if we end up being the host city.
Good question. The answer, I suspect, is that it never even occurred to the mayor that he might not have that right.
Peraica appears to see it differently. He says if Alvarez and Madigan don't act he'll take the matter to court himself.
I don't for one minute believe that either one of them will move against Mayor Daley. So I guess it's up to the commissioner.

i know there's plenty of chicagoans that don't like peraica for one reason or another, but this is a fantastic move on his part, one that makes you wonder why the rest of our elected leaders are so complicit in being led by the nose in daley's latest scam. twittering tony, despite some of his more objectionable right-wing nonsense, has my full support.

Daley is relying on general language from an ordinance which allows him to unilaterally execute further agreements to implement the Olympics. It is questionable whether the City Council intended that general language to override the specific allocation of only $500 million. Ordinary rules of statutory construction would suggest that the specific trumps the general. The court action suggested by Peraica is an appropriate way to call out Daley on his overly-expansive reading of the ordinance in an expeditious fashion before the damage is done. I agree that Alvarez and Madigan will not go near this issue. I also think our judges will be every bit as squeamish. Don't forget that Anne Burke ("I singlehandedly invented the Special Olympics") is sitting on the Illinois Supreme Court. Peraica is unquestionably crazy. But he does highlight the benefit of having a politician from another party - he can fly off the handle all he wants about Daley and Stroger, as he doesn't need to worry about where the Democratic Party will slate him in the future.

Yea, that's noble of Mr. Peraica, but Yo! nobody can ruin King Daley's dream of running the brothers from the hood in Washington Park! Are you all insane? Everyone has a price tag, including Mr. Peraica. Hey Dog, this is part of something bigger than the Olympics, it's called poor black people removal. The planners wanted something to move them out faster like a big bang project like the Olympics. Elites feel Chicago would be better served without the poor in the city. Hey, they don't pay enough taxes, steal rob and kill, put pressure on scarce resources and they are not contributing to the positive fabric of Chicago. This is the plan, we will see the outcome of the big bang project.
The Socialist, thanks for the truth, but unfortunately most Blacks are still voting for Daley, Stroger, Quinn, et. al., without realizing what the planners are up to.

Re: Very True, Thanks for responding. A few things about myself. I dream and crave for socialized/leftist policies from our government. For instance, a government sponsored option for health care, extrodinary tariffs on products made in China, more unions, free college tuition and more manufacturing in the United States producing hard/real assets. We have a fake economy built on moving and trading currency, stocks, bonds, sub-prime lending and retail; good for a few, but not the whole economy. As we are experiencing, this is not sustainable and more doom and gloom is headed our way. Socialist policies are real policies for every day Americans. Now, I'll rant about our right wing Republican Mayor Daley. The reason why blacks vote for Daley? He's found a system of boring people with his reforms that are hard to understand like TIF'S, charter, turn-around and contract schools, CHA plan for tranformation, underdevelopment in the hoods, the new communities program and upscale real estate development in Bronzeville, South Loop and moving into Washington Park around the University of Chicago. Also, the Mayor has made peace with every succesful black preacher and entrepreneur with land development deals, affordable apartments and city contracts. Plus, plenty of blacks work for the city in secure and stable careers like police, fire, administrators and high profile positions within his administration. JOBS and CLOUT keep BLACK people HAPPY and QUIET! Voting turnout in Chicago's last election was so fucking low it was rediculous, that's why Daley think he has a mandate. Only 300,000 people voted and he pulled 70% of that flock, which were probably patronage and city workers not looking forward to a new administration which always bring doubt and mystery with JOBS! So, people are not motivated to protest Daley's policies and are not engaged enough to follow his antics, spin, confusion and lack of transparency. FINALLY, PAT RYAN AND DALEY WILL GET THE GAMES IN CHICAGO NO MATTER WHAT! IT'S A DONE DEAL. PUT YOUR MONEY IN HIGH YIELDING ACCOUNTS, CHICAGOAN'S ARE GONNA NEED THE INTEREST TO FEED THEMSELVES AFTER THE TAXES ARE PAID TO COOK COUNTY. Remember, if Daley keeps jobs and patronage, EVERYONE is QUIET! INCLUDING WHITES TOO!
If they could get 300,000 votes last time, the opposition can raise the ante to 400,000 easy. There are enough people now losing money from parking meters gone mad, to paying higher taxes for Daleys pet projects that are all corrupt as it is to this recent Olympic scam. Time to organize the other million people suffering through 20 years of Daley Family corruption. Our money could be spent on much better things.

The Socialist, I agree with you about manufacturing. :) I'm not for either major party, nor am I for left or right, which is nothing but a smokescreen to (further) divide Americans. We have free college tuition via grants, but unfortunately some (if not most) of the students don't even try to do well in school. If freebies are handed out, then conditions must be met. :)
