Members of the City Council’s finance committee were universally happy Friday to have the chance to approve a “memorandum of understanding” between Chicago’s Olympics bid committee and dozens of business and neighborhood organizations.
The only problem was that there were so many people to thank.
“I just want to commend Michael Scott and Terry Peterson,” said 28th Ward alderman Ed Smith, referring to the co-chairs of the bid committee’s “community outreach” efforts.
“I just want to thank you, Ms. Healy,” said 27th Ward alderman Walter Burnett, referring to bid committee president Lori Healy.
“I want to say thank you to the committee,” said 20th Ward alderman Willie Cochran, referring to the entire outreach team.
“I congratulate my colleagues,” said 29th Ward alderman Ike Carothers, referring to his colleagues.
“I share my colleagues’ joy,” said Sixth Ward alderman Freddrenna Lyle.
Actually, several aldermen realized, it was possible that another problem might arise: somebody out there would probably find fault with the 13-page agreement, even though it laid out ambitious targets for affordable housing (30 percent of the units developed for the Olympics and eventually sold off), contracting set-asides (30 percent for minority-owned and 10 percent for women-owned firms), workforce training and education (it would be good to offer some), and hiring from underemployed communities (there will be an “ongoing effort toward workforce transformation”).
“I want to say to the folks who are going to start criticizing this document as soon as we’re done: you can’t play Monday morning quarterback,” said Latasha Thomas of the 17th Ward. She acknowledged that not every group’s every concern had been worked into the agreement, but insisted that everyone had been given the chance to offer input. And so the complainers had really lost their right to play quarterback at any time on Monday. “You can’t play Monday evening quarterback,” she said.
No one talked about how exactly the deal would be enforced. The targets are laid out with the qualification that they’ll be pursued “where feasible and within the scope of Chicago’s 2016 mission and purpose,” terms that could conceivably be open to interpretation.
The agreement promises the creation of an “independent compliance monitoring body” that will issue quarterly reports on meeting the goals, but aldermen said the matter of who sits on the body hasn’t been fleshed out yet. The document doesn’t mention what would happen if feasible targets aren’t met.
Still, Toni Preckwinkle and Pat Dowell, the aldermen who pushed hardest for a deal before next week’s visit by members of the International Olympic Committee, clearly believe they got as much as they could, and the measure is sure to pass the full council in a couple of weeks. “I wasn’t a cheerleader for the Olympics, but I’m feeling a lot better today,” Dowell said.
Several of her colleagues, and a succession of citizens who testified, offered her their thanks.

Homeowners should receive at least, market value for their home;renters should receive at least 90 days notice to date of sale of property. First, after the last election, I noticed small articles in various papers about people voting twice. Once, by taking advantage of early voting. And then by showing up ON election day and voting again. I recently saw another small article stating that Cook County election judges are going to be given stickers, evidently to MANUALLY compare early voting records with election day rolls, to make sure that people don't get to vote twice. WHY wouldn't the programmers of the voting software (that would be used by one of the largest counties in the country) write a code into the program that would PREVENT people from being able to vote more than once when they were aware of the early voting program? Second, how would some voters know to exploit that flaw in the voting software program by voting early and then showing up to vote AGAIN on election day? Now, how would you know anything about '..people who agree with...' anything I post? Also, if you hadn't noticed, I'm quoting comments, many comments, from many different 'people', whose opinions are quite different from your simple minded fealty to your masters. Thus the apparent lack of brevity, which seems to be so disturbing to you. Is it just a case of all that you're capable of understanding are the mumblings of your poster child? In the end, less than a paragraph is needed to sum up the midget's accomplishments, but it will take several lengthy volumes to document the details of the major, long term harms which your monkey breath boss has imposed upon our city and it's citizens. Maybe you'll get a chance to contribute to this documentation, when you're properly motivated.

If this guy or anyone else doesn’t like what we are offering he can quit. We had 40,000 sign up to take the firefighters test and he can be easily replaced.' The mental health clinics in Chicago are a joke. The majority of their mentally ill clients don't take their medications or don't even show up for their appointments. If they do, it's only because their SSI 'disability' (if you can call drug and alcohol dependence a disability) payments will be held up or they won't get their kids back. Then they go once or twice and you don't see them again for another six months until someone threatens to hold back on their money that comes from all of us---taxpayers. I was upset because I thought, here are Chicago's finest, our police department, who serve and protects, and Daley plays games with them but caves into pressure from a handful of people that sat outside his office. Let me ask you, do you think the police would be allowed to have a sit in on the fifth floor? No, they wouldn't. Someone put them up to it and with Daley's blessing. It's all an act, orchestrated by the usual suspects and paid for by us. And yesterday, when I saw Father Pfleger sitting next to Daley in the bleachers, it all became very clear. The more I read this blog, the clearer it becomes. That people do not vote and did not get out and vote yesterday makes me sick. Scholarship is providing less than different criteria to students to complete their college education. After reading this article only I came to understand that the students who are not brilliant also could avail scholarship according to their physical condition. Scholarship is given for persons who are very tall or small in height, or very fat. Scholarships are also granted for people having hobby of keeping pigs. I feel this article has to be brought to all so that they could apply for the eligible one. strange scholarships
