Intimate new concert series at Experimental Sound Studio

Posted by Peter Margasak on 02.26.09 at 04:31 PM

Chicago's Experimental Sound Studio has long been an invaluable resource, providing affordable sound recording to experimental artists in all mediums, but it's only occasionally hosted live peformances.

This Next Sunday, March 8, that changes with the launch of a biweekly series of solo concerts called "Sunday Solos." ESS's first bookings are inspired: Idiosyncratic pianist Jim Baker kicks things off this with a rare solo performance on a real piano (too often he makes do with an electric keyboard, since so few venues in town have decent pianos). The second concert, on March 22, is by this week's Sharp Darts subject, Azita--which I'm especially keen to see, since I've heard great things about her solo show last month at Rainbo. Also on the books are appearances by Olivia Block (April 5), Michael Zerang (April 19), Fred Lonberg-Holm (May 3), and Dave Rempis (May 17).

The hour-long concerts begin at 2 PM, with a suggested donation of $10 ($7 for students and ESS members).

Today's playlist:

Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Leavin' Town (Rounder)
DJ/Rupture, Uproot (The Agriculture)
Åse Teigland, Stille (NORCD)
Coh, Coh Plays Cosey (Raster-Noton)
Eddie Henderson, Heritage (Blue Note)
