Tears in Their Millet Beer

Posted by Miles Raymer on 12.03.08 at 03:27 PM

I've made the decision not to listen to anything today other than this compilation of vintage Nigerian sentimental country music. As in "country music made by Nigerians," which turns out to be entertaining in more than just an odd and culture-clashy kinda way--it's actually some of the best C&W (at least in the Bakersfield-meets-Laurel-Canyon mode invented by Gram Parsons) that I've ever heard.

BTW you may recognize Bongos Ikwue as the guy who interrupts the generally funky vibe of the Nigeria 70 compilation with the wild, Dead-like "Woman Made the Devil," which has become my favorite cut of the set.
