I realized this morning that I forgot to include Taste of Chicago, which starts tomorrow, in my roundup of food-related events for the next week. What reminded me? According to the Chicago Reporter, ten people who got salmonella poisoning after eating at last year's Taste will file separate lawsuits today against Pars Cove restaurant; 790 people reported getting sick after eating hummus from their booth. Pars Cove won't be at this year's event, but the Reporter got its hands on copies of the Chicago Department of Public Health’s daily inspection reports from last year, and it definitely wasn't the only booth with health code violations [PDF]. Out of the 67 vendors, 57 were cited for violations (on average, four apiece). To be fair, according to a spokeswoman for the Illinois Restaurant Association, which oversees the Taste, the booths were inspected at least twice a day, whereas restaurants are typically inspected just twice a year. Doesn't that make you feel good?
So here's your reminder: Taste of Chicago, Grant Park, Fri 6/27-Sun 7/6, 11 AM-9 PM most days. Bon appetit!
