Handy gas tips from your Web editor

Posted by Whet Moser on 06.09.08 at 11:23 AM

I had to take a car in for service this morning as a favor, and as I typically do I killed the time waiting by reading the professional memos posted at the cubicle I was seated at. This time, it was suggestions for maximizing the gas you get at the pump.

* Fill up early in the morning, when the temperature of the underground gas tanks is lowest, which minimizes fuel volume.

* Pump at the low or medium speed (most nozzles have three speeds), which minimizes vapor.

* Fill up when your tank is half full/half empty. This also minimizes the space in the tank taken up by vapor.

* If you see a gas truck at a filling station, don't stop at it. If they're filling the tanks, it kicks up sediment.

Side note: the dirt-cheap new Tata may or may not mean $5 gas in Illinois
