EveryBlock goes live

Posted By on 01.23.08 at 05:55 PM

EveryBlock, the latest project from Knight Foundation grant recipient and founder Adrian Holovoty, is live now. The filming list, liquor license applications, and business license by type (junk peddler, animal exhibition, etc.) listings are my favorites. It's fun to mess around in. Graphics geek note: if you dig down, you'll notice nice uses of sparklines.

My biggest criticism so far is that the news listings (e.g.) overemphasize the headlines over the intros (which are shorter than those on, say, Google News), so my eyes end up glazing over the METRO BRIEFSs and POLICE BLOTTERs. As long as headlines are written for print and not for the Web, a shift that's going to be a long time coming, attempts to scrape news articles are going to have to be creative.

In case you missed it, another local Knight Foundation grant recipient, the Chi-Town Daily News, is also going after the micronews market, only using the organic approach.
