What to do until the planes start flying on time

The Sun-Times has a nice piece pointing out the obvious: putting something more interesting in airports besides those infernal CNN TVs is a good idea. Deck out O'Hare in local art and it would be a closer step toward tolerable. Piping in Brian Eno's Music For Airports, the musical equivalent of Percocet, would make the inevitable delays pass by more pleasantly still. But, you know, baby steps.

I like Brian Eno, but I've always been very glad that the airports I've been to have NOT adopted his depressing "ambient" music for background. How about no goddamn music at all? I mean, I like music as much as the next guy, but I also think we have way too much of it swimming around us in this petroleum-guzzling industrial civilization. Must every public space be swathed in aural wallpaper? Must we constantly be cushioned from confronting our own thoughts and anxieties? How about a bit of blessed silence?
