My favorite story coming out of Washington these days is the emergence of Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. as one bad hombre you wouldn't want to mess with.
Last week Jackson got into a heated exchange on the floor of Congress with Lee Terry, a Republican congressman from Omaha, Nebraska. There are two sides to the story, which has been reported in the Washington Post and the Omaha World-Herald, but, curiously, not in either the Sun-Times or Tribune.
According to Terry, Jackson started it by cursing at him and asking him to "step outside." According to Jackson, he was just minding his own business when Terry began cursing at him.
The consensus in Washington is that Jackson would have whupped Terry's butt. "It would have been Bruce Lee vs. Pillsbury Dough Boy," one congressional aide told the Post.
It turns out Jackson's been studying martial arts and is an expert in kung fu and tae kwon do. He's even got a slide show of himself in action on his Web site -- you gotta see it to believe it.
I called Frank Coconate, the only guy I know who's had a run-in with Jackson. Coconate, the former city sewer worker who was fired after publicly urging Jackson to run against Mayor Daley, had a falling out with Jackson last summer at a restaurant -- another dispute that got loud and nasty.
"Oh, yeah, Jackson's really into that kung-fu stuff -- he's got a tattoo on his arm," says Coconate. "I showed him my tattoo and he showed me his. This was before we had the fight, when we were getting along. His is some sort of Asian writing, saying body, soul and mind or something like that. He said he took martial arts lessons to protect himself. I don't know -- I guess he thinks he's really tough since he lost all of that weight a few years ago."

Jesse Jackson gets up every morning and works hard. Jesse Jackson makes sure he supports his his family in a decent manner. He does not take advantage of his parents. I want Jesse Jackson as the next Mayor of Chicago. A great hard working black man, an example. Jesse Jackson works very hard and is an honest person all blacks can look up to. Great Father, Great Example for deadbeats to look up to. Jesse got his wife as Alderman, that is a great Man and Husband.

All that being said, I would still much prefer that 'orion' post often, with or without the appropriate response of "Fuck You.", than to have a faceless, nameless, censor deleting at will, regardless of how fair and honest a person this might well be. Let the orion's of this world post, it only HELPS expose their common ignorances and agendas. To maintain the open nature of this comment board requires open access, relatively uncensored, and the small gain in readability that would be achieved by regularly deleting feeble comments would not be worth the sacrifice in openness that this board provides. As to the regular straying off the articles' topics, this is a political article/blog, specializing in Chicago, Crook County and State political activities, so, to restrict the comments to the subject article would deny the complex and interconnectivity of the political environment. If the purposes of Ben and Mick and the Reader's existence is to do more than merely relate their observations of the political activities of our own political animals, if the freedom of the press is to achieve public awareness of those things that so affect all of our lives, than the slight inconvenience of having to scroll past their posts is not at all distracting to those who are focussed on the issues and is occasionally a source of amusement. Did Frank Coconate get his job back? Frank Coconate has a negitive $26,000.00 balance in his campaign "War Chest". I am sorry your newspaper thinks Coconate is a player.Frank has lost more campaigns for people that has helped. Frank is useless to all around him.
Alderman Howard Brookins,Alderman Manny Flores, Alderman Scott Waguespack. State Senator Dan Kotowski. Cook Couty Commissioner Pete Silvestri. Helped Old Man John Stroger , when everyone screwed him. Lost Anthony Peraica and Frank Avila jr....oh well.
Rev.Sharpy, $26,000.00 of his campaign debt was retired by Alderman Dick Mell, Alderman William Banks, Alderman Pat Levar, Senator James DeLeo, Couty Commissioner Peter Silvestri,Alderman Marge Laurino(and her wife Randy Barnett) and Alderman 100% proof Doherty. The deal was if Coconate leaves them alone, they would pay off his debt. The only loser in all this is Dom Longo, who's only value , is when Coconate runs for office he has someone run against him.
Because of the intricate interweaving of multiple interests found in city and county politics, because of the effectively incestuous nature of same, an article about any specific politician will inevitably lead to involvements of many other politicians. It's that 'tangled web' from the proverb "Oh what a tangled web we weave, When we practice to deceive" Deception is the common element in ALL of Chicago, Crook County and Illinois politics.

*Sigh* Assuming it is true, this action by Jackson, Jr. undermined decades of effort to wipe a horrible stereotype from the memory of a nation. It really doesn't matter if he had valid reasons for doing so, he did not serve his constituents or the nation well in performing this act. Ignoring the implicit support for those decrying advances in the civil rights of minorities that his action achieves, there is the practical matter of his relationships with other congresspersons. A single congressman has little power by himself. And as far as his alliances with other congresspersons, even the Black Caucus, well, would you want to associate with someone who threatens physical violence if you disagree with them? It does bring up an interesting question, though. While I never considered Jetstream to be in the same class as MLK, I have a hard time believing he would raise a child that would have these kind of core values; I wonder what influence half uncle(?) Noah had on him while he was growing up?
