I wouldn’t expect the official blog of American Idol chump Taylor Hicks to champion a collection of killer but obscure soul, yet that’s exactly what happened earlier this month. The Birmingham Sound: the Soul of Neal Hemphill Vol. 1, a superb collection released last year by Chicagoan John Ciba on his Rabbit Factory label, got big ups from Gray Charles, Hicks's webmaster. Responding to the post a few days later, Ciba writes, “There is definitely a connection with Taylor and the things Hemphill was doing down in Midfield in the 60s through the early 80s.” Written like a true spin master. Thanks to Joe Germuska for the tip.

Great to see this excellent compilation get the attention. John Ciba also recently reissued a 45 from Ralph "Soul" Jackson, one of the standout performers on "The Birmingham Sound."
"I wouldnât expect the official blog of American Idol chump Taylor Hicks to champion a collection of killer but obscure soul, yet thatâs exactly what happened earlier this month." Remember a long time ago, when people used to put bits of disparate information together and come up with novel theories? I really miss those days. Everybot these day just falls back on whatever shallow message floats to the top of pop media. Well, two subjects are too important to be treated so casually: politics and music. Sitting in tonight with Hicks at HOB Chicago: Keb Mo. Other stage mates since that TV show ended: Gov't Mule, Outformation, Widespread Panic, Robert Randolph, Allman Brothers, and many, many more... Just saying. Maybe there's room for some fresh thinking here?
Nice little read but I think you spelled "champ" wrong. It's with a "A" not a "U".. It's a mistake we all make..
Why not Peter? Don't box Taylor into the "American Idol" thing without doing a little thinking outside the Fox. John met with Taylor before his show at The House of Blues last night. I'll be interested to see what his comments are. Until then, here's an MP3 of Taylor blowing harp with Widespread Panic on "Fishwater" - enjoy! http://www.gcfiles.com/audio/Fishwater.mp3
