Are you sure you want to immigrate to America?

Remember the study showing that the longer Mexican immigrants live in the U.S. the more likely they are to become obese? Well, it just gets worse. This time the population under study is Black Caribbean immigrants. Writing in the American Journal of Public Health, David R. Williams of the University of Michigan and colleagues found, "First-generation Caribbean Blacks had lower rates of psychiatric disorders compared with second- or third-generation Caribbean Blacks."

Hmm, aren't first-generation immigrants of every ethnicity overwhelmingly optimistic strivers? By definition they are the poor folks with enough gumption to pick up and move to a completely foreign culture, start over at the bottom and all that? Hence they are the segment of any given population least prone to psychiatric disorders? (A manic-depressive is a lot less likely to have it together enough to take that flying leap, yes?) Which in turn would mean that by definition 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants from anywhere are more likely (normal random distribution) to have such problems, right?
