If you're greeting 2007 with a sensation more uplifting than vertigo, kudos to you. I kind of feel like I'm looking into the headlights of a year so devoid of funk James Brown couldn't stand to live in it. (But here's Douglas Wolk's six-hour James Brown show from WFMU to help ease you in anyway.)
As for Saddam, I didn't want to watch that video, but I did, and now it's just pointless to wish I hadn't. We probably ought to look, anyway. War imagery is like that: you're guilty for joining in the exploitation, guilty for having the luxury of avoiding the sight. Ain't no blues like the Human Nature at Its Worst Blues (not to be confused with the My Human Gets Me Blues).
I think January is a Dock Boggs and Blind Willie Johnson month until further notice.
