My top-ten (well, OK, 20) list of the year's best movies appears in this week's Reader, along with J.R. Jones's picks and lists from critics in various other fields. Variety has posted a discussion of same between me, Molly Haskell, and Jose Carlos Avellar.

Why did you have to take a cheap shot at Scorsese in your Varity discussion?

Why is telling the truth a cheap shot? Should I have pretended that I'd seen the film, or that I wanted to catch up with it?

Why is your 10 best list different on the indiwire critics poll?

Nothing wrong with shooting sacred cows sometimes. Scorsese is simply not as good anymore.

Jonathan, it would be also interesting to know your DVD preferences, you consider worthy and essential.. Are Van der Keuken coffrets and Route 1 Usa on your thumb-up radar?

I don't have either of those, at least not yet. For my DVD preferences, check out my recent posts on this blog about "Five" and "When the Levees Broke"--or, more generally, my regular column for Cinema Scope at www.cinema-scope.com
